U.S. Energy Bill -- Early Christmas Present or Lump of Coal?

All the tough talk in Washington, D.C. about the need to combat global warming, make America energy independent and stimulate the economy with homegrown, renewable energy sources turned to a whisper on Thursday, as House and Senate Democratic leaders said they would remove key provisions for the renewable energy industries from the latest energy bill.

First Solar: The Google of Green Tech? Solar panel maker First Solar's Google-like stock price - shares soared 34 percent today to close at $224.43 - is either a sign that green tech is getting bubbly or that investors genuinely see a huge potential market in renewable energy.

Solar Today
A Low-Energy Home Goes Even Lower

In upgrading their super-efficient dream home, the Guevara-Stones proved that affordable investments in solar energy can have great returns.

By Laurie Guevara-Stone

When my husband and I built our dream house in Carbondale, Colo., we wanted a home that puts the least impact on the environment for the cost that we could reasonably afford. So in 2006 we built a passive solar straw bale home with as many natural materials as we could incorporate (see "The Low Energy Home" by Guevara-Stone in the September/October 2006 issue). We also installed energy-efficient appliances to keep our energy use low. However, we wanted to go even further. That's why during the past year we have installed a 2-kilowatt (kW) photovoltaic system and a two-panel solar water-heating system.
