Solar Today - Lessons in Living Solar

By opening his solar-powered home - updated with the latest in home automation and efficiency - to tours, Avenson hopes to inspire tomorrow's innovators.

By John Avenson

The 1950s and '60s, when I grew up, was a time of wonder about the promise of technology to improve our lives. Nothing seemed out of reach, from the ultramodern architecture and chrome-accented cars displayed in LIFE magazine to the cutting-edge robots we saw in films like "2001: A Space Odyssey." The optimism of those decades directly shaped the life I've made and the suburban Denver solar home I've lived in for more than 25 years.
