Meeting Announcement
Preparing your Home for Energy Efficiency & Solar

Wednesday, June 20, 6 PM

Solar NV's June meeting will feature a presentation by Rick Van Diepen. Mr. Van Diepen, an experienced building design professional, will provide information on reducing your energy demand before sizing a PV system for your home.

Our meetings are open to the public, so please join us and invite your friends. Our programs provide information on renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Solar NV meets once per month, every third Wednesday at 6 PM, at the Nevada Power building at 6226 West Sahara Avenue in the Wengert Room, at the rear of the main building. Our meetings are a great place to network with others who share an interest in renewable energy. Meet designers, installers and just plain folks who are living with the sun....and using it to their advantage! More details, directions and maps.

Solar Today : Solar Water-Heating Resurgence Ahead?
As global warming and economics position the U.S.
market for widespread adoption, national players move to dominate.
One key component of a successful SWH program is a rating and certification regime like the Solar Rating and Certification Corp. (SRCC) protocols. As great strides in the development and implementation of U.S. solar energy policy are occurring at all levels, there is a growing recognition that the first commercially available solar energy technology — solar water heating (SWH) — has a critical role to play. This proven, cost-effective technology reduces the user’s reliance on fossil fuel-based water heating, thereby reducing both greenhouse gas emissions and monthly energy bills. Even in cloudy climates, SWH systems can return their cost in utility bill savings in less than 10 years.

50 Largest US Cities Overall Sustainability Ranking

The SustainLane 2006 US city rankings of the 50 largest cities is the nation’s most complete report card on urban sustainability. The rankings explain how people’s quality of life and city economic and management preparedness are likely to fare in the face of an uncertain future. These indicators gauge, for instance, which cities’ public transit, renewable energy, local food, and development approaches are more likely to either limit or intensify the negative economic and environmental impacts of fossil fuel dependence.

Solar NV Committees
All Solar NV members are invited to participate on our committees. In fact, we urge you to join a committee and make a difference. You will make friends, learn new things and help Nevada move toward energy independence!

Here's a list of our committees and respective chair persons: You can send an email to any chair person if you would like more information. Keep in mind that you do not have to be an expert in solar energy or have any particular skills. If you are passionate and want to help create positive change, then you have all the qualifications!

Nevada Legislature 2007 - Energy Related Bills Passed

Two key energy bills became law Thursday June 14, 2007 [SB437 and AB178]

SB438

This bill gives incentives for increased energy conservation, and creates programs to encourage wind and solar energy production.

AB178

A. This bill allows renewable energy systems that produce up to one megawatt of power to qualify for net metering programs. Net metering is a special billing arrangement that allows customers to pump surplus power into the grid and then draw on that credit later.

B. This bill will phase in higher efficiency standards for light bulbs sold in Nevada which will ban the sales of incandescent light bulbs in Nevada starting in 2012. Nevada is the first state in the nation to pass such a measure, according to the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project.
