One- Solar Thermal Power Plant |
Wednesday, July 18, 6 PM |
| Solar NV's July meeting will feature a presentation by Nicholas Potrivitza form Solargenix. Mr. Potrivitza will provide information on Nevada Solar One, the 64 megawatt (MW) solar thermal power plant near Boulder City.
Our meetings are open to the public so please join us and feel free to invite your friends. Our programs provide information on renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Consider this your advance notice about our next meeting on May 16 featuring Chris Davey of EnviroMission Ltd., Australia, who will discus innovative Solar Tower technology for large-scale solar thermal power stations. |
Solar Today : Time to Certify PV? |
Opponents worry that photovoltaic certification could open a Pandora's box, but another industry model offers promise.

Demand is growing for an independent program to assess the performance, durability and quality of photovoltaic components and systems. Photo courtesy of NREL.

After decades of uncertainty for photovoltaics and other renewable energy technologies, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT 2005) defined a path forward with a host of new incentives. Meanwhile, renewable energy credits (RECs), which certify that a certain amount of electricity has been produced from a renewable source, are vigorously evolving.
Purchased by utilities to meet local requirements for a diverse energy portfolio, these RECs, or “green tags,” eventually will be traded alongside pork bellies, corn and other commodities (see “Giving Green Credit Where It’s Due,” May/June 2006 issue). Other performance-based incentives are also emerging.

SPEAKERS:
Dr. James E. Hansen
Dr. James Hansen is arguably the world's leading scientist on global warming. He is the head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City. Ralph Cicerone, president of the National Academy of Sciences said of Dr. Hansen’s climate science work, "I can't think of anybody who I would say is better than Hansen. You might argue that there's two or three others as good, but nobody better.” launch presentation
Edward Mazria AIA
Edward Mazria, founder of Architecture 2030, is an internationally recognized architect, author and educator. His architecture and planning projects span a thirty-year period, each employing a cutting-edge environmental approach to its design. After the AIA, USGBC and ASHRAE recently adopted the 2030 Challenge to address the Building Sector’s role in the global warming crisis, Mazria wrote "The task we face is daunting. Working separately, we could accomplish something significant in each of our respective spheres. But by working together, we actually have a chance to influence the course of history." launch presentation
Chris Luebkeman AIA
Chris Luebkeman is a Director and leader of Arup’s global Foresight and Innovation initiative. He is tasked with exploring and synthesizing the trends affecting society’s development. Luebkeman is a senior fellow of the Design Futures Council and in a recent article wrote, “There is no doubt that, as our built environment has transformed from a local phenomenon to a global one, we are now confronted with more pressing social, technological, economic, environmental and political change forcing us to a local mindset - on a global scale.”
