eNewsletter - January 2007

Happy New Year from Solar NV!

All of us at Solar NV wish you a wonderful New Year. We are looking forward to 2007 and the many promising changes that are on the horizon. With solar energy exploding world wide, it looks like the long-awaited transformation to renewable energy is begining to take place in earnest.

Let's all work together to make 2007 a banner year for the adoption of clean, renewable energy systems!

Meeting Announcement - An Inconvenient Truth....Live!

Our January meeting promises to be a very interesting event. The kick off program for 2007 will feature a live presentation of "An Inconvenient Truth" by Patricia Mynster, Regional Conservation Organizer for the Sierra Club.

Tricia recently attended a special training program in Nashville, TN led by Al Gore and that included leading scientists in the field of climate change. She was one of a select few who was accepted for this program from over 4,500 applicants!

This is THE topic of our times and one of the most important reasons why a rapid shift to renewable energy is the key to our long term future. Don't miss this event! We will have time for interactive discussion after the presentation.

Solar NV's monthly meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month, starting at 6 PM, at Nevada Power on West Sahara.

Special notice!! Our new meeting room at Nevada Power is the Wengert Room. This is located at the rear of the building, inside the curved block wall. We will no longer use the upstairs meeting room.

See you there!

Solar NV Committees

Solar NV is off to a great start in 2007. We have new committee chairs and they're excited about what we will collectively create this year. All Solar NV members are invited to participate. In fact, we urge you to join a committee and make a difference. You will make friends, learn new things and help Nevada move toward energy independence!

Here's a list of our committees and respective chairs:

You can send an email to any chair person if you would like more information. Keep in mind that you do not have to be an expert in solar energy or have any particular skills. If you are passionate and want to help create positive change, then you have all the qualifications!

Thanks to Allison, Deidre, Frank, Gary and Les for their leadership.

Solar Today - Sustainable Transportation: Weighing the Options

As oil supplies dwindle, we would be wise to consider the efficiency of each new option, from energy source to point of use.

In his presentations, Richard Heinberg, author of the books The Party’s Over and Powerdown, shows a slide that plots the vertical growth of yeast when sugar is added to a petri dish. The yeast multiply out of control before starvation and toxins in their own waste cause a massive die-off. In the next slide Heinberg plots growth of the human population since the discovery of fossil fuel, a curve that happens to match the growth part of the yeast curve. Then he asks, are we smarter than yeast?

In coming years, as the economic and environmental costs of motorized transportation increase, communities will be built and redeveloped for people instead of cars.
