Southern Nevada Solar Home Tour

The Solar NV table.

The 2006 Southern Nevada Solar Home Tour was a tremendous success! Approximately 500 people attended the tour on Oct. 7 with picture perfect fall weather that enhanced the experience even more.Even before the event officially opened, people were lined up at The Gardens, raring to go! While getting their guidebooks, everyone had the opportunity to speak with representatives from several organizations including Solar Generations, Nevada Power, the U.S. Green Building Council - Las Vegas Regional Chapter, the Sierra Club, Bombard Electric, the City of Las Vegas, and of course, Solar NV!
With a total of fifteen sites including nine homes and an assortment of commercial and educational facilities, there was lots of diversity and something for everyone. We've gotten a lot of very positive comments from tour goers and although the homeowners on the tour were tired by the end of the day, they too said the experience was fantastic.

Friendly smiles were abundant.

USGBC in action.

Solar NV would like to extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who helped make this event a reality. Special thanks to the home tour committee members: Adrienne Monzingo, Amorette Pacent, Chris Brooks, Collin Burnell, Deidre Radford, Frank Tepper, Guy Snow, Pam Vilkin, Par Rasmusson and Susan Haas....the team that worked hard week after week to organize the event, locations, guidebook, logistics, maps, exhibitors and sponsors.
Thanks also to the volunteers from the U.S. Green Building Council - Las Vegas Regional Chapter. And the event would not have run nearly as well without the Sierra Club's incredible showing of volunteers, including Lydia Ball and Tricia Mynster. Several non-profits contributed to the success of the home tour.

Setting up.

Solar NV volunteers wore bright yellow shirts.

Interest in solar & green building? Oh yeah.

We can't say enough in the way of thanks to the homeowners and other facility operators for their tremendous generousity. By opening your homes and businesses and sharing your personal experiences and knowledge, you made a significant contribution to our community. Bravo! Special thanks to everyone at The Gardens at the Springs Preserve for all that you do!
Solar NV is deeply grateful to our Platinum sponsors: Kyocera Solar, Bombard Electric, Solar Generations, Tradewinds Construction and Solargenix; our Gold sponsor: Pinnacle Homes; and our Silver sponsors: Lucchesi Galati and the U.S. Green Building Council - Las Vegas Regional Chapter.

Solar NV prez, Par Rasmusson.

November Meeting Announcement

This is a reminder that the monthly meeting for Solar NV, the Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Solar Energy Society is Wednesday, November 15 at 6:00PM and will be held at NV Power on West Sahara in Meeting Room A. Click here for details.

Annual Elections

Our ANNUAL ELECTION is held every November. At our meeting on November 15th we will have the opportunity to elect four new Board Members (our thanks to Laura Padilla for her service who is resigning her position as she is soon moving to the Carolinas).

We invite you to give your energy to the cause of Renewable Energy and consider running for a position our Board of Directors. Solar NV is a great organization looking for those who care about renewable energy and are willing to work with us toward that goal.

If you are interested, please call or send an email and we'll get you on the ballot. Or, if you know someone too shy to nominate themselves, you may nominate them (of course it's always a good idea to let them know about first). If only four people are nominated or self-nominate, it will be a very quick election!

Please email Solar NV President Par Rasmusson right away or call (702) 215-9119.

China - A Giant Awakens

China - A Giant Awakens is how William Ramsdell of American Solar Electric titled his presentation. He just returned from a 12-day trip as part of a delegation from ACORE (American Congress on Renewable Energy) to the People's Republic of China.

Gaining personal access to many types of energy suppliers and manufacturers, William will share what he learned about China and their plans for Renewable Energy. Don't miss this personal and fresh look into the world's most populous country and their RE plans.

Thanks to Robert Buntjer of the Electrical JATC for Southern Nevada for his excellent presentation at our last meeting.

Solar NV meetings are a great way to learn more about renewable energy and to network with others who share common interests.

Everyone, including nonmembers, are welcome to attend Solar NV meetings so please feel free to invite your friends!

"Solar Revolution: The Economic Transformation of the Global Energy Industry"

Solar Revolution

In his new book, "Solar Revolution," fund manager and former corporate buyout specialist Travis Bradford says that is happening not so much because solar is the clean, renewable source of energy but because it has proved to be cost-effective. Solar Revolution outlines the path by which the transition to solar technology and sustainable energy practices will occur.

"The shift will happen in years rather than decades and will occur because of fundamental economics."

The Photovoltaic Boom

In our feature “Photovoltaics - The Ultimate Renewable” we demonstrate why photovoltaics are a compelling long-term investment even at 2006 prices. In short, the reason you would pay a lifetime cost of $.20 per kilowatt-hour to install a photovoltaic system is because once you’d absorbed that initial installation cost, your annual cost to replace photovoltaics at the rate they degrade is well below the market price of conventional electricity, under $.02 per kilowatt-hour. For this reason, even at today’s high prices, photovoltaic manufacturers are selling them as fast as they can make them. So why isn’t there more photovoltaic manufacturing capacity? Why is the installed base of photovoltaics in the world barely over 10 gigawatts?
