June Meeting Announcement

This is a reminder that the monthly meeting for Solar NV, the Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Solar Energy Society is Thursday, June 15 at 6:00 PM.

This month’s meeting will be an opportunity for all attendees to share their best experiences in renewable energy, energy efficiency or other techniques they’ve found effective. We will also be discussing the future of the organization, brainstorming and setting some goals for Solar NV.

Everyone, including nonmembers, are welcome to attend Solar NV meetings so please feel free to invite your friends!

The meeting will be held at The Gardens at the Springs Preserve. The Gardens is located at 3701 W. Alta Drive, east of Valley View Blvd., near US 95.

Location details, directions and a map can be found on our Meetings page.

Special thanks to our good friends at the Springs Preserve who so generously provide such a wonderful meeting space. If you are not familiar with the Springs Preserve, it is a very special, beautiful and educational experience that should not be missed.

IMPORTANT!! An Inconvenient Truth - Must See!!

Al Gore’s new movie, “An Inconvenient Truth” opens in Las Vegas this Friday, June 16th (see details below). The film has been described as illuminating, passionate, a must see, timely, fascinating, powerful, necessary, relevant, convincing, and well-reasoned. This is a message for humanity that we have entered into what Al Gore calls “a period of consequences.” The topic transcends politics, economics, race, nationality and geography.

This is directly related to the work we do at Solar NV since renewable energy is a major component of the solution to climate change.

This is not a review of the movie, but rather a head’s up that we have a very important learning opportunity here. It is strongly suggested that we take full advantage of it. “An Inconvenient Truth” opens soon at the Century Suncoast Theaters for a very limited time. Let’s go see it, talk about it, learn from it and then create some results. Take your friends and family. Tell your elected officials. Heck, TAKE your elected officials! There should not be one empty seat in the house for every showing of this film! Let’s get the word out to EVERY PERSON we know.

Southern Nevada must take a leadership role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as becoming a model for sustainability. Education is the key. This movie is a powerful educational experience.

Not everyone can or will take the time to read multiple books or do the research required to gain a clear picture of the tremendous environmental changes that are occurring in the world. Yet these changes are happening at an unprecedented rate. There has never been a more critical time in the history of humanity than right now. The immediate actions we take, as individuals and as a species, will determine the future experiences of our children, grandchildren and indeed, all our descendants - forever.

Humans are but a small part of the vast and complex web of life that supports us. The environment does not exist as something outside us, we ARE the environment, in the most profound and fundamentally scientific way. What we do to the air, water and earth, we do to ourselves. It is crucial that we all take the time to educate ourselves about the critical impact we are making on our world. Please make the effort, we owe it to ourselves. I’m not the only one who shares this viewpoint.

In a review of “An Inconvenient Truth” in the Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert said, “In 39 years, I have never written these words in a movie review, but here they are: You owe it to yourself to see this film. If you do not, and you have grandchildren, you should explain to them why you decided not to.
